SETTLE Quaker Meeting House, a Grade II* Listed Building and the oldest place of worship in Settle, has been shrouded in scaffolding for the last few weeks while the roof has been stripped, repaired and replaced.

While the Meeting House cost just £80 to build in 1678, the 2015 repair bill will be some £30,000. Settle Quakers were supported by Lafarge Tarmac Limited, operators of the Dry Rigg, Arcow and Swinden quarries, with a grant of £20,000 through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Michael Lambert, Quarry Manager at Lafarge Tarmac's Dry Rigg Quarry, said: “It is somehow fitting that a company that digs vital building materials out of the ground in local quarries, is supporting a project using another stone building material – roofing slate.

“We are delighted to be able to support the long established Friends Meeting House in the heart of Settle, where it is well used by both the Friends and other members of the local community.”
