WHEN Linda heard about the new Cancer Support Centre in Skipton she jumped at the chance to volunteer. Having experienced the loss of two loved ones from cancer, she knew first hand the difference support groups can make. Three years ago when her Gran was diagnosed with cancer, it was a local support group that really helped her through it and she was so glad that she had been able to access that kind of support.

‘Helping people who are affected by cancer, to enjoy what they can in life and remain positive is not only a deeply rewarding thing to do, it brings things we take for granted into perspective too.’

‘Seeing the difference that this type of Centre brings to people going through such emotional and physical trauma, and how well they have adjusted to their situations as a result of it, is very humbling. That is why I decided to set myself an epic challenge and raise funds for the charity too’.

‘I just felt that while I have my health and a good body, I could use it to do more good in the world. You never know when things in your life might change and you might need a helping hand from somewhere like Cancer Support Skipton. I would like to help them to continue their fantastic work. The idea to run 2,500 miles was inspired by a friend of mine, Gemma, who cycled 5,000 miles raising money for cancer charities. I figured that there was no way I could run that far but 2,500 miles will be a huge challenge. It works out as 5 times the amount I ran last year and the equivalent of about 50 miles a week, every week... I am already behind with my running miles, due to illness in February and some problems in my feet prior to the Hardmoors 55 race, but even if it takes longer than I hoped for I will run those miles and I won't make them easy!’.

Cancer Support Skipton initially opened it’s doors back in October just 2 days a week, but within a few months it was obvious there was a demand for our services and the Centre increased it’s opening times to four days a week.

The Centre offers practical things like Information and Transport, as well as emotional support through our counselling and complementary therapies.

Our classes in art offer a welcome diversion for many, whilst our relaxation group offers an opportunity to unwind. These are a great way to meet other people who understand exactly what you are going through and to chat with others in a similar position.

All of our services are free to access and we rely on the support of people like Linda to help continue this support.
