A HEROIC Bradford paratrooper who was killed in Afghanistan has had a street named in his honour.

Family and friends of Private Martin Bell gathered yesterday for the official unveiling of Martin Bell Way, in a new Keepmoat housing development off West Royd Road in Wrose, Shipley.

Representatives of Pte Bell's parachute regiment were also at the ceremony, which featured prayers and balloons being released in his memory.

His mother, Elaine Bell, said: "It's been three years in the making but I'm absolutely overwhelmed.

"Every time people drive or walk past the street they will see the sign, which is amazing.

"I'm in awe today, and I'm just so grateful to everyone involved."

Pte Bell was killed in January 2011 by a bomb as he went to rescue a fellow soldier who had been injured by a similar explosive device in Helmand province.

The 24-year-old former Salt Grammar School pupil, who had joined the Army in 2009, was posthumously awarded a George Medal for his selfless action which saved the life of his wounded comrade.

His father, Simon Bell, said: "This means everything, and ensures he will never be forgotten.

"It's nearly four and a half years on, but we remember him every day.

"It's not just a road, it's an address that will be written a million times on mail and postcards.

"It's a wonderful thing."

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Pte Bell was the 350th British military fatality in Afghanistan, and his mother has been at the forefront of a national campaign to get a street named after every solider who died in the conflict, an idea that is supported by Keepmoat Homes.

Sarah Hopkinson, community engagement and investment coordinator at the developer, said: "We were delighted to support this project.

"Elaine is a truly inspirational lady and for her to follow this through and make it happen is tremendous.

"We've had conversations with her regarding other soldiers who don't have streets named after them, and we would like to support that idea nationally."
