PLANS to merge building control services across Bradford and neighbouring Kirklees have taken one step closer after Kirklees Council’s cabinet has now agreed in principle to support the move, with Bradford Council’s executive having done so in March.

Merging the service, which ensures new-builds comply with building regulations, is designed to secure its future. Unlike other council services, it faces competition from private firms, who can also carry out inspections.

There are different ways the councils could share the service, including a straightforward merger, or setting up a company jointly owned by the two councils.

Senior Kirklees councillors agreed earlier this week to support the proposal.
