POLICE are making another attempt to trace the driver of a mystery car which left a popular Bradford man seriously injured in an hit and run accident.

Officers have been unable to identify the vehicle involved, after studying CCTV footage of the incident, and are renewing appeals to the public for help in finding the motorist, who fled the scene leaving victim Russell Jenkinson lying badly injured in the road.

Mr Jenkinson, 56, was crossing Manchester Road, close to Bankfoot Post Office, when he was struck by a silver five-door saloon car, possibly a Peugeot.

As witnesses rushed to help, the driver stopped his car in Carrbottom Road, got out and looked at what was happening - then drove away.

Mr Jenkinson needed reconstructive surgery after fracturing his cheekbone in the accident. He also needed more than 20 stitches in a head wound after he was "poleaxed" by the car, at about 12.45am on Sunday, March 22.

Mr Jenkinson, a Bradford Council refuse collector, of Rooley Crescent, Bradford, is now recovering at home.

His brother, Howard, had criticised police for the length of time it took them to collect the CCTV and put out a witness appeal.

He has now told of his frustration about the CCTV evidence.

He said: "I can’t believe there weren’t any more cameras around in that area that could have picked up something. I find it incredible.

“I can’t believe there are so many cars around at 12.45am on a Sunday morning that they can’t pick up a clear picture of it on CCTV.

“The police are saying they can’t enhance the CCTV footage they have got to see the registration of the car."

Police said the quality of the footage was too poor to share with the Telegraph & Argus to aid their appeal.

Sergeant Rick Lyon, of the Safer Roads and Neighbourhood Support team, said: "Officers have viewed the CCTV footage, which shows a side profile of the vehicle involved.

"However, even with the help of image enhancement software, it has not been possible to identify the exact make or model of this vehicle.

"The vehicle was believed to be a silver saloon car and was last seen driving down Carrbottom Road. It is possible that it would have sustained some damage to its front in the collision.

"Failing to stop at the scene of an accident is a serious offence, and I would urge anyone who either witnessed the collision, or who saw a vehicle of similar description in the area at about 1am on Sunday, March 22 to contact the police on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111."

Howard Jenkinson added: "It is clear from the CCTV that it was a hit and run. It is absolutely scandalous. He should have looked after him, like the other people. He has just driven off not knowing whether he has killed him."
