TWO brothers who have been battling cancer at the same time look set to return to school after the Easter holidays.

Shane and Callum Edwards have been undergoing chemotherapy treatment for a brain tumour and leukaemia respectively. But following clear scan results recently, the pair are now expected to return to their respective schools.

The family, of Miles Hill Crescent, Bierley, received good news last week when younger brother Shane, nine, got the results of a repeat scan after the return of a brain tumour last year.

Shane had already baffled doctors in October, when, after chemotherapy, his last scan showed he no longer had a tumour on his brain - only three months after the family had been told there was no hope.

Now, mum Tracy Edwards, 33, said they had been expecting Shane's latest results to be good, but nevertheless, were pleased and relieved when that proved to be true. In addition the youngster was told he would not need any more chemotherapy.

Mrs Edwards said: "His scan was clear again after the last one six months ago, and is still showing no signs of cancer. We were also told that his treatment is to finish - so no more chemotherapy. Just scans every three months. I don't think Shane quite realised at first. But when he asked about taking his tablets, and I told him he didn't need to take them any more, he jumped up and down and was so excited. It's a real milestone for us."

Shane will now return to New Hall Park Primary. His older brother Callum, who was only diagnosed with leukaemia in January, but is already in remission after a month of intensive hospital treatment at Leeds General Infirmary, is expected to return to the Phoenix Centre in Holme Wood.

Callum faces further rounds of chemotherapy for another three years, but is currently receiving the treatment at home, administered by his mum.

Mrs Edwards, and her husband Philip 51, are still agonising over to whether to allow their other two sons, Scott, who is nine, and Kyle, 12, to be tested for the cancer gene.

Mrs Edwards added: "We are not sure about having Scott and Kyle tested now. Whatever the result - whether it is positive or negative, we wouldn't know what form. We are still waiting for a referral, but we are not sure at the moment."
