GILLIAN Soutar is fast emerging as a striker of international quality.

She brought her goal tally to five in as many games for Scotland

yesterday in the Four Nations women's

under-21 hockey tournament at Tweedbank.

Soutar, a Heriot Watt University student, scored Scotland's second

goal in their 2-1 defeat of Wales with a brilliant drive after having

been left unmarked in the heart of the circle.

The Welsh hit back 13 minutes from time with a penalty corner

conversion by Penny Arbourne but they rarely threatened to force a

division of the spoils.

Wales were also in the driving seat at the outset but two squandered

chances by Betsy Lloyd let Scotland off the hook. Rachel McPherson

eventually turned the game in Scotland's favour when she burst through

on the right and drove the ball underneath the diving body of Emma Dodd

in the Welsh goal.

Ireland, meanwhile, crushed Denmark 6-0.

Their substitute centre-forward, Claire McMahon, scored a hat trick in

the closing six minutes after Karen O'Brien (2) and Marissa Ahern had

laid the foundation for their win.
