A NEW row has broken out between Rosyth and Devonport dockyards, this

time over the refit of the Type 42 destroyer HMS Gloucester, at present

at Rosyth. Babcock Thorn, Rosyth's commercial managers, says the

Gloucester is part of its allocated core programme from the Ministry of

Defence but has learned that Devonport has put in a bid for the refit,

believed to be worth about #15m.

A Rosyth spokesman said yesterday: ''Gloucester is part of the core

programme to be refitted at Rosyth -- that's why she has docked here. It

has just been confirmed by the MoD that Devonport have submitted a

tender for the work. This bid is below the belt and may well be an

attempt to destabilise the workload at Rosyth.''
