FORMER Prime Minister Sir John Major has thrown his backing behind a Conservative candidate seeking re-election in Pudsey.

Sir John attended a dinner in support of Stuart Andrew, who is hoping to be re-elected as the MP for Pudsey.

He praised Mr Andrew for his involvement in the campaign to prevent the closure of the Children’s Heart Surgery Unit in Leeds.

He said: “I am delighted to support Stuart Andrew in his bid to be re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Pudsey, Horsforth and Aireborough. Stuart is a tireless advocate for his constituents, and has a strong track record in taking up issues of importance to the local community."

“I commend him especially on the lead he has taken on the Children’s Heart Unit campaign.

“It is vital that dedicated and effective MPs, such as Stuart, are re-elected to Parliament on May 7, so that they can continue to represent the interests and concerns of those they serve.”

Afterwards, Mr Andrew said: “I am aware that Sir John grew up under similar circumstances to me, which initially inspired his political ambitions.

“I could not think of anyone better to help launch my re-election campaign, and I am very grateful to Sir John for his ongoing support."

“It was humbling to hear that no matter a person’s background, when a country provides the right conditions, they can achieve anything.”

Also standing in the Pudsey constituency so far are Jamie Hanley for Labour, Ryk Downes for the Liberal Democrats, Roger Tattersall for Ukip and Claire Allen for the Greens.
