A baby girl has died after a house fire in Bradford late last night.

The five-week-old died at Bradford Royal Infirmary after she was carried from the house in Sandford Road, Barkerend, by firefighters.

Fire crews also rescued a three-year-old boy, who suffered serious injuries, and a 27-year-old woman who suffered minor injuries. They were both taken to BRI from where the boy was later transferred to a specialist burns unit at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.

A West Yorkshire police spokesman said his injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Firefighters from Bradford and Idle stations found the family trapped in the house at about 11.40pm after a blaze broke out in a first-floor bedroom.

Police were today carrying out forensic investigations and a fire investigations team was trying to establish how the blaze started.

Today, neighbours described how they watched in horror as the family was rescued from the blaze.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: "I was already in bed and I heard the fire engine and people outside, so I came downstairs.

"The lady that lives there was screaming outside and people were holding her. The baby was in the garden."

Another neighbour, Mumtaz Satti, said the woman's husband had been outside the house as the rescue took place.
