Kristian's musical thankyou

12:16pm Thursday 1st March 2007

A young guitarist who battled a rare type of bone cancer is to take part in a concert in Bradford to raise money for charity.

Kristian Dutson-Bromley will join his father Darren Dutson-Bromley for the concert on Thursday, March 22, at the Alhambra Studio.

The pair performed a concert of Spanish and Latin music at the same venue two years ago which raised more than £2,000 for charity.

This year they hope to beat that figure and handover a substantial amount of money to Candlelighters, a Yorkshire-based charity dedicated to helping support children with cancer and their families, while at the same time promoting research into childhood cancer.

The latest concert will be a celebration of American music and will feature music by Gershwin, Ellington, Porter, Van Heusen and Kern, as well as South American composers Bonfa and Jobim.

Throughout the concert Mr Dutson-Bromley will be joined by a number of special guests throughout the evening, including singer Fiona Pearson.

Now 11, Kristian, of Thackley, started playing guitar at the age of four and made his debut at the age of six playing with the Echo 42 big band in York.

He has since performed at numerous concerts and recently played with guitarist Martin Taylor at the Cleethorpes Jazz Festival.

Kristian has achieved all this despite having to learn to walk again after the bone in his leg from the knee up was removed as part of his cancer treatment.

In 2003 the youngster was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer and had to undergo extensive surgery and chemotherapy.

He is now in remission and as a way of saying thank you to those who helped him wants to raise as much money as possible for Candlelighters.

Mr Dutson-Bromley said: "Throughout his treatment a number of charities helped Kristian in various ways and this concert is a way to try and pay back their kindness by raising money and to help make people aware of the wonderful work that they do."

Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, cost £6 and are available from the Alhambra box office on (01274) 432000 or contact Carol on (01535) 272039, Darren on (01274) 617616 or e-mail jazzwithdbk@talk21.com.
