PUPILS at Low Ash Primary School are too young to remember it, but they faced a mystery that could have come from the script of the Quatermass science fiction television show.

Overnight a giant ‘egg’ appeared in the school grounds with police turning up to investigate as children arrived for classes to hear that site manager Jason Byrne had made a strange discovery.

He had arrived in school to find the fire alarm sounding, and some mysterious noises on the school answer machine.

After searching the grounds Mr Byrne found a huge egg, surrounded by feathers and slime, nestled in a tree.

In the hours which followed, the school in Wrose Road, Shipley, called an emergency assembly to decide on their next moves, and through the day a selection of ‘scientists’ arrived from secondary schools in the area to offer further opinions.

The project involved all the school’s pupils and was the result of an idea generated by the teaching staff, said assistant head teacher Fiona Meer.
