More than 800 pupils from schools across the district have wowed crowds with song, dance and even "body percussion" on the stage of Bradford's St George's Hall.

The annual Schools' Prom, organised by Bradford Council’s Music and Arts Service, began last night with a wide variety of performances from children from primary and secondary schools, and will continue tonight with another packed programme.

Now in its 14th year, the two night event is the culmination of months of hard work by pupils and staff and the various different schools involved.

This year the Master of Ceremonies for the evening is actor and TV presenter Chris Clarkson, who has featured in many areas of TV and theatre.

Highlights of last night's programme include a performance by winners of this year's AMP Awards Take 4 & 7/8 from Beckfoot School, a version of Eye of the Tiger by a chorus of primary school pupils and performances from the DM Dance Academy.

Tonight there will be performances by different schools, the winner of the Lady Mayoress' Festival of Talent, Eesa Amin from Carlton Bolling College, performing comedy impressions and Bradford Youth Orchestra.

Tony Johnson, head of the service said: "The Schools’ Prom is always a popular event and the two concerts will give around 800 pupils the opportunity to perform in a prestigious venue for their friends and families, showcasing their skills and talent.

"This year we are particularly pleased that the primary and secondary winners of the Lady Mayoress’ Festival of Talent Competition will be performing.”

Councillor Ralph Berry, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: "The Prom is always a well-attended, hugely successful event and we are so proud to host it each year and demonstrate the support which is given to schools and pupils to embrace this talent.”

Felicity French, assistant head of the arts service, said: "There are different acts both nights. We've been planning this since September so it has taken months of work to get this to a high standard.

"We try and take on different schools each year so as many schools as possible can get involved. We've already got some coming forward saying they want to do it next year.

"It is a great opportunity for young people. They are a bit intimidated when they first get on the stage, but you really see their confidence grow. It is the biggest crowd they are likely to perform to."
