A 56-YEAR-OLD woman died after she was dragged under a car as her daughter screamed for the driver to stop, a jury at Bradford Crown Court heard.

Nasreen Bibi was struck by the front of Mohammed Gulraiz's blue Vauxhall Zafira when he pulled out of Back Blenheim Road on to Church Street, Manningham, Bradford, shortly after 9am on February 18 last year.

Mrs Bibi died in hospital ten days later of a traumatic brain injury, prosecutor Nikki Peers said yesterday.

She alleges that Gulraiz failed to check to his left, where Mrs Bibi and her daughter, Aisha Bibi, were standing.

Miss Peers said he was looking to his right and moved forward to turn left when he saw a gap in the traffic, hitting Mrs Bibi.

Gulraiz, 45, of St Paul’s Road, Manningham, denies causing Mrs Bibi's death by careless driving.

Miss Bibi told the jury she saw the car driver wave them on.

"Mum was slightly ahead and the headlight knocked her over. She was under the car. I was screaming and that's when the car stopped," she said.

She told the court her mother was in good health and did not need glasses except for reading.

Mohammed Hussain, Gulraiz's solicitor advocate, said to Miss Bibi: "This was obviously a very sad and traumatic incident for you."

Mr Hussain suggested to her that the niqabs both women were wearing would have made it more difficult to see to the side.

"When you are wearing the niqab your peripheral vision will be slightly affected, won't it?" he asked.

Miss Bibi said she could see perfectly well in her niqab.

Mr Hussain said Mrs Bibi could have tripped and fallen head first under the car.

Bus driver Arshad Ahmed said he saw a car waiting to pull out on his left and two women dressed in black walking along, chatting.

"The woman nearest the kerb was stepping in front of the car, slightly on the road and slightly on the footpath.

"The car pulled out and one of the women disappeared and the car went up and down. Straight away, I thought 'He's hit her'," Mr Ahmed told the court.

The jury has been told that Gulraiz stopped his car immediately and ran round to see what had happened.

He told the police he pulled forward out of the alleyway when he saw a gap in the traffic.

He denied waving the women across in front of him.

The trial continues.
