BRADFORD has the highest number of electric vehicle charging points outside London, a new Council report reveals.

Bradford Council is trying to improve air quality in the district, after West Yorkshire was identified by the Government as having the third-worst pollution levels in the country.

An air quality study commissioned by the Council and paid for by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) found that 40 per cent of emissions in central Bradford were caused by buses, with many of these buses being older, more polluting models.

Councillor Val Slater, who oversees environmental health, said: "Studies such as this will lead to health benefits for people living and working in Bradford as well as doing less harm to the environment."

On Tuesday, Bradford Council's Executive will decide whether to pursue the idea of setting up a Low Emission Zone in Bradford.

London set up a Low Emission Zone in 2008, in which drivers of older diesel vans, lorries and buses are charged a fee if they drive into the area.
