FAIRTRADE will be the focus of a community event in Keighley this weekend.

About a dozen stalls will be set-up in the Airedale Shopping Centre on Saturday promoting the ethical trade.

The 10am to 3pm event starts efforts this year by Keighley's Fairtrade group to raise awareness of the issue and get more people – including businesses, schools and religious groups – involved.

Keighley was awarded Fairtrade Town status in 2013 after volunteers, backed by the Town Centre Association (KTCA), worked with the community to meet tough qualifying criteria.

"It is going extremely well – 26 businesses have come on board in the past year," said Steve Seymour (pictured), the KTCA chairman and manager of the shopping centre.

"Schools, cafes and other groups have taken it on too, which is very pleasing. The response has been excellent.

"But to retain the status we need to meet certain criteria, such as increasing membership.

"Saturday's event is centred on Fairtrade but will also have a wider community base, with different organisations represented."

Among those present alongside the Fairtrade group in the mall cafe area will be Oxfam, Marks & Spencer, the Co-op, Keighley in Bloom, Healthy High Streets, Dementia Friendly Keighley, Lavender Fields and the Lemon Tree, and Sue Ryder may have a stall.
