A SICKENED councillor is pledging action in the wake of the crash in which a popular pensioner was killed on his mobility scooter.

Faisal Khan said he had been shocked at the scene of the horrific fatality in Laisterdyke last Friday.

And with residents voicing concerns about the speed of some cars using Leeds Road, he said he will be raising the issue of safety with Bradford East Area Committee.

"One death is too many and something needs to happen for people to feel more confident about their safety," said Cllr Khan (Ind, Bradford Moor), whose comments came as police arrested a second man in connection with the incident.

Cllr Khan was one of those who raced to the scene after Michael McDermott's mobility scooter was in a collision with a Seat Leon as he crossed Leeds Road on Friday afternoon.

Affectionately known as Micky Mack, the 70-year-old was on his way home when the collision happened. He was flung 15ft into the road and his scooter was embedded in the front of the car. Mr McDermott died at the scene.

Two young Asian men were seen to get out of the car and flee.

Mr McDermott's son, David, said the crash had been an accident waiting to happen. "We have had near misses with vehicles at that spot," he said.

Cllr Khan said: "I live in the area and I see cars going quite fast along that stretch of road.

"After what happened, people have been coming to me and saying there is a parade of shops but nothing to slow the traffic down. They are saying that something is needed there and I will be raising the matter with the Bradford East Committee.

"We need to look at any measures which would slow traffic down.

"I was really shocked when I was at the scene last Friday. You could see the looks of horror on people's faces.

Something must be done."

Speaking from his home in Dublin, David McDermott said he had often visited his father in Laisterdyke and had witnessed bad driving in the area. "What happened doesn't surprise me," he said.

A spokesman for Bradford Council said: “We deeply regret any fatal road casualty and our thoughts go out to the victim’s family and friends.”

Police investigating the crash were last night questioning a 21-year-old Bradford man, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and failing to report a road traffic collision.

A 34-year-old Bradford man, who was previously arrested in connection with the incident, has since been released on bail.

Anyone with information which might assist the investigation is asked to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
