A WOMAN was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire left three rooms of her house clogged with thick smoke.

Fire crews from Bradford and Fairweather Green were called to Whetley Lane at 10.43am today after reports of a fire at a house.

The fire had started due to some unattended food in the oven catching fire, and although it was quite small, it had created a large amount of smoke, with ground floor rooms almost totally filled.

A woman in her mid 40s, the sole occupant of the house, was taken to hospital by Yorkshire Ambulance Service for a check up.

The smoke was so thick that firefighters entering the house could only see two feet above the ground.

Watch commander Adrian Pilling said: "For a fire that was limited to the kitchen, and only really involved the cooker, it produced a huge amount of smoke. We think the lady had not been paying attention to her cooking and this led to three ground floor rooms being filled with smoke down to about two feet above the floor.

"If the doors had been closed, the smoke would have been contained. It is important to be attentive when you're cooking."
