A TRAINEE chef from Saltaire made it through to the finals of a national competition to find a young chef who excels at Oriental cooking.

Bradford College student Joseph Clayton, 18, showed off his skills at the up and coming chef awards, sponsored by Oriental grocers' Wang Yip on Monday.

Held at University College Birmingham, the 16 young chefs who made it to the final had to cook before Peter Griffiths, head judge and President of the British Culinary Federation, Michelin-starred chef Glynn Purnell and Larkin Cen, 2013 MasterChef finalist and director of Asian food innovation Hokkei.

Joseph, who wants to work on cruise ships, said: "I was over the moon at making it through to the finals. It was brilliant. I find Oriental cookery fascinating because of all the different ways you can cook the food. I love mixing interesting ingredients together and producing beautiful dishes."

The competition, which was open to applicants aged between 18 and 25 years, was won by Gemma Field, who works for the NEC Group in Birmingham.
