A LIFELINE cancer support charity is appealing for more volunteers to help clients cope.

The charity urgently needs more qualified therapists to join a team delivering one-to-one sessions.

Cancer Support Bradford and Airedale says the help cancer sufferers receive helps them deal with problems and boosts well-being.

Based in Smith Lane, Bradford, the independent charity has been providing practical and emotional support to those affected by cancer since 1988.

Part of the support available includes the Wellbeing service which helps with the emotional and physical effects of a cancer diagnosis.

The Wellbeing service has six complementary therapists who all give their time and expertise for the benefit of clients. Between October and December 2014 the centre offered more than 250 one-to-one complementary therapy sessions.

Each year, the charity helps more than 3,500 people throughout the Bradford district.

One client said: "The therapist had a lovely manner, a soothing voice and magic hands! I really enjoyed the experience, the therapy, the break and the benefits. Everyone at the charity is kind, considerate and professional.”

Now the centre needs more qualified volunteer aromatherapists and/or massage therapists to join the team.

Volunteer Samina, who provides sessions in aromatherapy, massage, reflexology and Indian head massage, said: "I am also able to support clients with psychological and physical needs. It is a very rewarding experience and I see it as my way of giving back to the community.

"The clients are always so appreciative. The much-needed additional support they can access makes such a big difference when living with a cancer diagnosis.”

Sarah Wood, the charity's services support manager, said: “A course of sessions with an experienced complementary therapist can give clients valuable one-to-one time.

"Many people find the support they receive helps them to cope at a difficult time. They often find their general sense of well-being improves.”

As well as therapy sessions, the centre can help with matters such as transport, information and welfare rights advice. Counselling is also available.

Sarah said: "We rely heavily on donations from the community and local businesses, which makes the contribution of volunteers especially important."

The centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
