HUNDREDS of potato lovers sifted through boxes of rare breeds of the much-loved vegetable at Saltaire's ever popular Potato Day.

Held in Shipley College's Exhibition Building, Saturday's event was organised by the West Yorkshire Organic Group, and attracted people of all ages.

All eyes were on some varieties, with Kestrel and Nicola moving at a particularly brisk pace, and growers and potato eaters were happy to see so many breeds under one roof.

As people queued up waiting for the event to start, they were serenaded with specially written potato themed songs that spoke of "all the potato people queuing down the street, paper sacks all ready to take their seeds away." It went on to name-drop some of the 42 varieties on sale.

During the day there were talks by potato expert Alan Romans.

John Dallas, one of the organisers, said other years had seen up to 110 varieties on sale, adding: "It is all about the availability. This year we've got 42 varieties. We've had singers singing potato themed songs. There were a lot of people first thing and we expect people to be coming through the whole event."
