A MAN riding a stolen motorcycle jumped into an icy pond to escape a dog walker who was pursuing him after the bike ran over his pet, a court heard.

Daniel Hill, 24, had to be rescued by the police and fire service after swimming in the dark to an island in Peel Park, Undercliffe, Bradford.

The stolen Yamaha machine, raided in a burglary at Peel Park Works, Bradford, in December, was written off after ending up in the pond as well.

Hill, of no fixed address, was locked up for eight months at Bradford Crown Court today and banned from driving for 12 months for burglary and aggravated vehicle taking.

He was sentenced with Adam Baldwin, 24, of Oak Villas, Manningham, Bradford.

Both pleaded guilty to burgling a detached garage at a house in Glen View Road, Bingley, overnight on August 12 to 13 last year.

The pair forced the doors and made off with expensive mountain bikes and power tools.

They were arrested at Baldwin's home the following day after they were caught on the householder's CCTV committing the offence.

Baldwin was found in possession of a small amount of cannabis and stolen property from the house was found at his address.

He was jailed for six and a half months.

Hill, who was on bail, was riding pillion on a stolen bike when it ran over Tiff, one of two dogs being walked in Peel Park by Jonathan Coyle shortly after 6pm on January 2.

Mr Coyle kicked out at the Yamaha and it toppled over and went into the pond, prosecutor Jeremy Lindsay said.

The machine's registration plate had been removed but it was traced to the burglary the previous month.

Mr Lindsay said Hill had been smoking cannabis when he agreed to have a ride on the stolen bike.

Tiff was believed to have survived the incident.

Hill was treated by paramedics after being rescued from the island.

Stephen Couch, Baldwin's barrister, said he had trained as a mechanic but got in with the wrong crowd. He had been in custody since early October.

He had previous convictions for house burglary, conspiracy to handle stolen goods and possession of drugs.

KamDhesi, Hill's lawyer, said he was homeless at the time but his family continued to support him.

He had a criminal record that included theft, house burglary, battery and aggravated vehicle taking.
