A POLITICAL party for Yorkshire has hit out at rules which mean it can’t show a party election broadcast on television.

Yorkshire First had wanted to put out a broadcast in the region in the run-up to this year’s general election.

But election rules state a party in England must be standing in at least 89 seats to qualify for a broadcast, and Yorkshire only has 54 constituencies.

Richard Carter, of Yorkshire First, said the system was “absurd” and to highlight the issue they would put up a candidate in the City of London and Westminster. He said: “As the name of the party suggests, Yorkshire First is just fighting seats in Yorkshire, in the same way the SNP contests seats solely in Scotland or Plaid Cymru in Wales.

“This does not prevent them from having a broadcast in their respective territories.”
