MORE than 180 pupils from five primary schools went head-to-head in the finals of a poetry competition at Tong High School.

The schools – Ryecroft, Bowling Park, Birkenshaw, Lower Fields, and Hill Top – had all been swotting up for their big day in the Accelerate Performance Poetry Competition.

Since the start of the school year in September, the children had been working with Conrad Burdekin – author of The Hungrumptious Blumpfh and other poems – to develop their ideas.

The Accelerate Programme delivers school-based activities, as well as half-term and summer camps, for youngsters.

Programme manager Claire Caunce said: “This competition has enabled students to explore literature and get excited about reading, writing, performing, and also finding their voice.

“Writing poetry can be fun, and anyone can do it.”

Birkenshaw won the category for pupils in years one and two, Hill Top scored full marks for its year three and four performance, and Lower Fields won the year five and six competition.
