A CONSTRUCTION worker had to be lowered to safety by West Yorkshire firefighters following an incident which left him unconscious at the top of a five storey building in Bradford.

The worker was apparently hit by a falling object while working in the roof area of the Royal Chambers building in Upper Piccadilly, Bradford, at around 9.30am yesterday.

Firefighters were called to assist because the staircase to the top of the building was very restricted and an internal lift had been removed, leaving an open shaft.

Specialist ambulance staff had put the casualty, who had been unconscious before waking up again, in a neck brace.

Firefighters with specialist technical rescue and line rescue skills from the Cleckheaton and Rawdon stations joined their colleagues from Odsal to set up a line system to lower the casualty down the lift shaft to safety.
