No major accidents were reported, but traffic was backed up in the worst affected areas, such as roads on high ground in Queensbury and Shelf, and several bus services were delayed.

At Bradford University, exams were going ahead as usual, but students would be allowed to enter up to half an hour late.

All schools remained open despite the wintry conditions.

Work to fell an avenue of more than 30 mature trees in Saltaire has been delayed today due to the weather.

Part of a major restoration scheme in Victoria Road, the first stage of the £720,000 project was expected to start today, but due to the poor weather conditions, work will now begin tomorrow.

Yorkshire Water has issued a warning about the risk of frozen pipes resulting in bursts for homeowners around the region as the wintry weather sets in.

With snow and ice affecting large sections of Yorkshire this over the past 24 hours, the company is raising awareness of some simple steps that can be taken to avoid an expensive headache, including:

  • Keep an eye out for any pipework and taps that might be exposed to freezing temperatures.
  • Wrap any exposed pipes them in lagging. Cut a piece of foam insulation to length and clip it on.
  • If you can, leave the heating on constantly at a low temperature. If severe weather is forecast, set the heating to your usual level day and night.

Once the snow clouds disappeared, J C Mullarkey captured these stunning images at Clayton Heights.
