ALMOST a third of boys never write for fun outside school, according to figures released today by the National Literacy Trust.

The trust, which is behind the Bradford Literacy Campaign, has found 31 per cent of boys do not write outside of class, while almost the same amount of girls (32 per cent) write daily. It warns the trend could be effecting school performance.

Their findings show young people who write for fun outside school daily are four times more likely to be writing above the expected levelcompared with young people who never write outside school (27 per cent versus 7 per cent).

But six out of ten boys say they don’t enjoy writing at all. The National Literacy Trust’s fourth literacy survey of almost 30,000 8-16-year-olds shows boys are much less enthusiastic.
