A “VICIOUS and sadistic bully” who brutally murdered a retired Bradford College lecturer has had more time added to his sentence after attacking another prisoner in jail.

Stephen Browning was given a life sentence at Bradford Crown Court in 2007 for the murder of Susan Grundy, who was battered to death only yards from her home in Bridlington after she moved to the seaside town from Great Horton, Bradford, in 2002 hoping for a “better life.”

Leeds Crown Court heard yesterday he was serving his 24 year minimum term in Wakefield prison on June 4 this year when he kicked another inmate, breaking his jaw in two places.

Michael Collins, prosecuting, said the complainant Andrew Bradwell had taken some provisions to his cell that morning and Browning had gone in and taken a pouch of his tobacco.

Bradwell challenged him about that and “the defendant threatened him ‘don’t tell anyone or I’ll get you.”

But the prisoner did report it to a member of staff. Later that same day, Browning returned to the cell. When he was asked to return the pouch, he offered Bradwell three rolled up cigarettes.

Browning then turned as if to leave the cell but stopped and punched Bradwell once in the face causing him to fall to his knees. He then kicked him to his face while at the time wearing steel toe-capped boots.

Mr Collins said the impact of the kick broke the other prisoner’s jaw on both sides as well as causing extensive bruising and a cut lip. He had to have surgery a few days later.

Robin Frieze, representing Browning, said it was the first incident of violence he had been involved in since his sentence. His earliest release date was not until 2031. “He accepts he acted wrongly.”

Browning, 38, who grew up in Heckmondwike, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and was sentenced over a video link to HMP Manchester to 40 months in jail.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC told him the sentence would be consecutive adding a further 20 months to his minimum term before he can be released.

He said it was an aggravating feature he had been wearing steel toe caps at the time of the kick.

The Judge told him: “I understand when you attacked the woman in Bridlington you also used your feet to kick and stamp on her.”

Bradford Crown Court heard how Browning had followed Mrs Grundy, 56, through the streets of Bridlington after she had been on a night out with friends.

He was a complete stranger to her and was living in the seaside resort with his parents when he met her by chance in the street after he had been drinking heavily and was short of cash. He stalked her almost to her home before he attacked her.

He moved her up a ramp to a secluded spot behind some bushes where he savagely beat her, kicked her and stamped on her. He partially stripped her, sexually assaulted her and robbed her of her handbag.

Her body was found near wheelie bins the following day.

Mrs Grundy had worked for West Yorkshire Ambulance Service and lectured and trained in first aid at Bradford College.

After the case police described him as a “vicious and sadistic bully.”
