A FRAUDSTER who pretended to slip on a bag on a Bradford supermarket floor to make a personal injury claim for several thousand pounds was labelled a 'thief and a criminal' by the judge sentencing him today.

Waheed Iqbal staged the accident at Lidl in Manchester Road while being investigated for making a similar insurance claim against a Shipley gym, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Iqbal, 36, of Hollings Road, Girlington, Bradford, was convicted of two offences of fraud by Bradford and Keighley magistrates last month and committed to the Crown Court to be sentenced.

Judge Jonathan Rose sentenced him to ten months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 280 hours of unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay £8,200 in compensation and £620 prosecution costs.

In mitigation, Iqbal's barrister, Nick Askins, said his client had been a fool.

But Judge Rose told Iqbal: "You are not a fool. You are a criminal. You are a thief.

"The public are tired of you, and people like you, making fraudulent claims that impact on them and the companies involved."
