A WHEELCHAIR-BOUND Bradford swimmer has swum the equivalent of the length of the English Channel to raise much-needed funds for a spinal charity.

Mark Longstaff, 54, completed the gruelling challenge at Bowling Pool yesterday, having swum the 22 miles, or 1,416 lengths of the 25m pool, over the past three months.

Along with 13-year-old Bradford girl Georgina Chisholme, he has raised more than £700 for Aspire, a charity that works with people who have spinal chord injuries, providing adapted housing, independent living advisors, and grants for specialist equipment such as lightweight wheelchairs.

Mr Longstaff, of Sticker Lane, Laisterdyke, has suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, but says he is always seeking new goals to get fitter.

Earlier this year, he was presented with a B-active award from Bradford Council for his dedication in keeping fit despite his disabilities.

"I am delighted to have completed the Aspire Channel Swim," he said.

"I am now taking on another challenge, in which I am hoping to complete 120 lengths a week on average for the next 12 months.

"I have also entered the Great North swim at Windermere, which takes place in June next year, in aid of the guide dogs charity, and I will be training in the outdoor pool at Ilkley Lido.

"I am really looking forward to the outdoor swimming challenge, which is another goal I have set myself, and one I want to complete."

As his condition deteriorated, Mr Longstaff, who has undergone more than 20 operations on his legs, was confined to a wheel-chair at the age of 38, unable to take part in any weight-bearing exercise due to problems with his spine.

Keen to stay as fit and healthy as possible, he started aqua running classes at Bowling Pool three years ago.

Away from his exploits in the pool, Mr Longstaff is a regular participant in the disabled bike ride organised by Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure, and also volunteers as a steward in the Bradford Park Runs.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council's executive member for sport, said: "Mark is a truly inspirational person.

"We're pleased he is able to use our facilities and receive support from our staff to help him raise money for this very worthwhile cause."
