FIREFIGHTERS have issued further warnings about the dangers of fireworks after a firework posted through a letter box started a house fire.

Fire crews were called to Minnie Street in Keighley last night to reports of a property on fire. When they arrived they found that the property was empty. They got into the house through an unlocked window, and once inside found a spent firework next to the front door.

Luckily the firework had burned itself out, and only caused damage to the floor around the front door.

Watch Commander Jimmy Johnson said: "A firework had been posted through the letter box. It had burned out and only caused minor damage. We have to stress that fireworks are not to be used irresponsibly. People should make sure they are only used at organised events.

"We also want to get the message out that people should get home safety assessments, as this property didn't have a smoke alarm. The owners were quite lucky there was not more damage."

Police said they were contacted by the fire service at around 9.30pm. A suspect was believed to be still in the area, but police were unable to find him.

Police confirmed that the house was unoccupied and officers are waiting to speak to the householders.
