FIREWORK hooligans have been issued with a tough warning by Bradford's public safety boss following two incidents where people were put at risk.

In one incident a terrified family were ambushed in their home by hooded yobs who hurled a lit firework into the building, leaving two asthmatic brothers aged 10 months and two years old needing hospital treatment.

Another resulted in the arrest of a man at City Park, Bradford, following reports that fireworks were being hurled around the area mid afternoon.

Now Cllr Imran Hussain, Bradford Council's deputy leader and stronger communities spokesman, has warned offenders: "It is criminal and will be treated as criminality. The police will take action.

"We understand that people want to enjoy themselves on November 5 but safety must be paramount.

"Anyone who is deliberately behaving mischievously and putting others at risk will be dealt with appropriately," he said.

The authorities are working together in Bradford this year to ensure the safety messages circulate as widely as possible and that as much work as possible is done to prevent anti-social behaviour.

However, a Keighley family have spoken of their horror after a lit firework was hurled into their home.

The shocking incident has been condemned by police and fire chiefs, who say such actions could cost children's lives after the children were taken to hospital as a result of breathing fumes from the exploding firework.

Mother-of-five Alexandra Sandorova said they were confronted by the thugs after answering a knock at the front door of their house, in Cartmel Road.

"They just threw this firework into the lounge and then ran off," she said.

"It exploded with a loud bang.

"It was really frightening. I was very scared and so were the children.

"I've no idea why anyone would do this. Nothing like it has ever happened to us before."

Her baby son Vincet Pukijova and his young brother Julius – who are both asthmatic – were taken to Airedale Hospital by ambulance as a precaution, but were not detained.

The other children, Alexandra, six, Michal, 10, and Michaela, 11, were unhurt.

Miss Sandorova, 33, who is Slovakian, has lived at the address for only about two months.

Emergency services were called to the terrace house following the incident, shortly after 5pm on Sunday.

Among those who attended were crews from Keighley and Bingley fire stations.

A Keighley fire service spokesman said: "When we arrived all the occupants were safely outside.

"There was some scorching to the floor in the house and there had been a bit of smoke but we didn't need to do anything."

The West Yorkshire brigade slammed the actions of the culprits as reckless.

"Fireworks are explosives and are incredibly dangerous when abused like this," said a spokesman.

Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team is investigating the incident and is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Sgt Blair Mitchell said: "Our inquiries are continuing.

"I would urge anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Cartmel Road area of Keighley at around 5pm on Sunday to contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."

A man was arrested following the City Park incident, at around 3.30 pm on Tuesday. When officers turned up, the suspect was arguing with members of the public. A police spokesman said: "The male continued with his poor behaviour when the police arrived who rewarded him with a free ride to the cells."
