A NEW mechanical simulator is helping a Worth Valley charity introduce disabled people to horse riding.

Haworth Riding for the Disabled (RDA) says the five-speed custom-built machine, nicknamed Penny, mimics the actions of a real horse.

“Many first-time riders are afraid of the initial contact and mounting of a horse but they can overcome this on the simulator and be gradually introduced to a real horse when their confidence and skill level has increased,” said Jane Lawrence, for Haworth RDA.

“Also, it will allow progressing riders the chance to experience a change in pace and learn the skills needed to adapt safely while under close supervision.”

She paid tribute to all those who helped fund the simulator, which cost £24,500. Sponsors included Sport England, the Greggs Foundation, Cash 4 Kids and the Green Hall Foundation.

Eleven volunteers from the Cross Roads stables have taken part in a sponsored ride – organised by Claire Coultas – to help buy a hoist, for assisting riders on and off the machine. The ride raised £487.
