A KEIGHLEY-BASED opticians has donated much-needed equipment to help set up an optical practice in a remote part of Tanzania. Airedale Opticians, which also has a base in Cross Hills, has provided a slit lamp instrument, which is used to examine the front of people’s eyes, along with diagnostic eye drops and dyes.
Optometrist and Airedale Opticians' managing director Mohammed Hafejee (pictured), said he was giving the equipment to his Taunton-based friend Chris Jacobs, who is travelling to Tanzania as part of a support mission next month.
Mr Hafejee and Dr Jacobs completed their training together 14 years ago.
Mr Hafejee said the equipment his firm is donating would be used to treat people on the island of Zanzibar. “It’s a really worthy cause, and I’m happy to be able to support it,” he added.
Dr Jacobs said: “It’s very generous and charitable. The slit lamp is quite an expensive bit of kit. This will all be used to help set up an ophthalmology unit in a rural part of Zanzibar.”
