AN ANGRY councillor has claimed fly-tippers in Bradford are "getting away with murder."

Councillor Mohammad Shabbir was reacting to news that a hotspot for fly-tipping in his ward had been targeted again at the weekend.

Building rubble and a fridge-freezer were among the items of rubbish dumped on Wallbank Drive in Frizinghall.

Bradford Council said the incident was now under investigation and asked for witnesses to come forward.

Cllr Shabbir (Heaton, Ind) said: "Over the last six months there has been an increase in fly-tipping in and around Heaton and Frizinghall.

"That particular spot, on Wallbank Drive, we had just managed to get clear of three loads of fly-tipping. Then last weekend some more had been dumped.

"It is commercial operators just dumping bricks and fridges and God knows what.

"It is a criminal act and there needs to be heavy sentences. They are getting away with murder at the moment.

"It is a blight on the area - for people living there and people travelling through there."

The rubbish had been shifted when Cllr Shabbir visited the site yesterday afternoon, but he added: "I am asking for people to take responsibility for their own waste, rather than offloading it to people who say they can get rid for £10 or £15 but are just dumping it."

He added: "I want local communities to keep an eye out for dumpers, to get registration numbers.

"I want more patrols or cameras in that area to spot who it is. I think it is one group of people doing it."

Ruth Lees, Bradford Council’s environmental health manager, said: "The incidents of fly-tipping in Wallbank Drive are being investigated by Bradford Council. In the meantime the landowners are clearing the waste.

"We would ask anyone who has witnessed fly-tipping, and can provide information about the date, time and vehicle used, to contact the Environmental Enforcement team on 01274 434366.

"Fly-tipping is an illegal act and we would welcome help from the public in our efforts to catch the criminals who carry it out."
