A WOMAN died in the serious accident involving two lorries and two cars on the M606 yesterday.

Initially details of any injuries were limited, but police said this morning that a driver of one of the cars was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Major Collision Enquiry Team would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, which happened just before junction three on the M606 northbound at around 2pm.

Two HGVs, a Renault Laguna and a Ford Fiesta were in collision.

A 60-year-old Bradford man in another car received serious, but non-life threatening, injuries and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody this morning.

Detective Sergeant Carole Greaves said: "We are continuing enquiries into this incident yesterday evening and are appealing for anyone who witnessed what took place to contact us.

"I would like to thank drivers for their patience, as the closure although unavoidable, inevitably caused tailbacks and delays."

Both carriageways were shut by police for more than two hours to allow the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to land.

Two rapid response vehicles, two ambulances, a hazardous response team and clinical supervisor also attended.

The motorway was fully reopened just before 9pm last night.

The incident happened on the northbound carriageway between junction two, Merrydale Road, and junction three at the Staygate Roundabout.

Screens were put up to block off that section of the northbound carriageway as police and emergency services carried out investigations for around seven hours.

Traffic was diverted via Staithgate Lane, with northbound congestion into Bradford backing up to Chain Bar on the M62 and beyond.

Stationary traffic was eased when the southbound carriageway reopened after 5pm.

Motorists took to social media, with one saying: “Just gone past accident on M606. Never seen anything like it before.” Another said: “M606 is rammed with police, ambulances and the fire brigade.”
