A COUNCILLOR who claims he and his wife were subjected to more than 30 historical death threats is calling for the police investigation to be reopened.

Paul Cromie has secured a meeting later this month with the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, Mark Burns-Williamson, to discuss the issue.

Cllr Cromie (Queensbury) said he and his wife, Lynda, were subjected to the threats when they represented the British National Party on Bradford Council.

The husband and wife politicians left the BNP in 2011 and now sit as independent councillors.

They say many of the incidents - which ranged from threats to shoot Lynda Cromie in the head and slitting her husband's throat, to raping their children - were reported to the police but they were told the Crown Prosecution Service would not prosecute.

The couple is now asking for the files to be reopened.

Cllr Paul Cromie said a meeting had been arranged in Bradford with Mr Burns-Williamson to discuss the historic death threats. He has asked senior Bradford police officers to provide police records of hate incidents logged since 2004 in respect of their case.

He said: "I am very happy that Mr Burns-Williamson has agreed to meet me. I am hoping he is going to reopen the files and have a look at them."

The councillor said he was concerned his death threat complaints had been "swept under the carpet."

He added: "Lynda and I had police security equipment fitted to our home and we missed several full council meetings on health and safety grounds because of the threats.

"Lynda and I demand action. We want the people who threatened us to be brought to justice."

A spokesman for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner confirmed Mr Burns-Williamson had agreed to meet Cllr Cromie, but declined to comment further.

West Yorkshire Police said they were looking into the complaint.
