SCHOOLS are being encouraged to get solar panels fitted to slash their energy bills.

The move could save the district's schools up to £5 million over the next 15 years.

But Bradford Council is warning them not to turn to private companies to fit the panels, as Council workers are trained to do the work and won't take a cut or lock them into long-term contracts.

So far two local schools have had solar panels fitted - one by the Council and one by a private firm - but another 40 could be suitable for the green technology, according to a new Council report.

At Saltaire Primary School, where specially-trained Council staff fitted solar panels, the school has saved £2,700 since September last year.

The report says private companies have been approaching schools about fitting solar panels, but warns of the risks this could involve.

It says schools often have to enter into long-term contracts of 20 to 25 years, with "clauses which could adversely affect school finances in the future".

And it says the firms involved "retain the majority of benefits".

The issue will be discussed by Bradford Council's environment and waste management overview and scrutiny committee next week.
