DETECTIVES investigating a savage dog attack on a father-of-three want to speak to a paper boy and a young mum who fled for safety.

Lee Flatt thought he was going to be killed as he was mauled by two banned American Pit Bulls in the "terrifying" incident on his street.

A brave neighbour, in Buttershaw Drive, Buttershaw, beat the dogs off with a bin, giving the 35-year-old a split-second chance to get away, during the attack at 7.30am on Wednesday.

Two men were questioned in connection with the incident, but there have been no arrests.

Police now want to trace a paper boy and young mother mentioned in a report by the Telegraph & Argus.

The terrified boy who saw the attack banged on an elderly woman's door to be let in and a woman carrying a baby jumped over a garden fence to safety.

Surgeons were due to carry out plastic surgery on Mr Flatt's arm yesterday. His best friend, Gary Longfellow, said: "He's okay but still in shock."

Police said the dogs were American Pit Bulls - a banned breed in the UK. A third dog - a Red Nosed Pit Bull - was also seized.

Sergeant Richard Sheard, from Bradford Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "There were a number of people in the area and on the street when this attacked happened, and we want them to get in touch with us.

"In particular, we want to speak with a youth who was delivering newspapers and a woman who was carrying a baby who both asked for assistance from a local resident."

Anyone with information should call 101.
