A FOOTBALL tournament and fun day is being held tomorrow in memory of a 20-year-old man who died after a car crash in Queensbury.

Kallum McCarter died from his injuries almost five weeks after the Mini he was a passenger in was in a collision with a Toyota Hiace private hire vehicle on Easter Monday in April.

Now, family friend Donna Howarth, whose children grew up with Kallum, has organised a tournament and fun day to pay tribute to him and raise money in support of his family.

And she hopes the day will be "unforgettable for a family whose son was taken far too soon as he loved life so much".

Donna said: "Kallum passed away, and his mum had a brain haemorrhage a couple of years ago and has been off work.

"I thought I would do an event to raise some money for them. It's a community event, getting behind a family that has had a hard time and is dealing with a tragedy.

"They are like a family to me. My kids went to school with Kallum. I just wanted to do this for the family."

Speaking about Kallum's death, Donna said: "I was heartbroken, I still am. His favourite saying was 'loving life'. He text his mum that on the night he died."

Donna said she was expecting "thousands" to attend the event, which is on from 12pm until 5pm at Thornton Recreation Ground and will feature a five-a-side tournament, tombola, hook-a-duck, face-painting, wet sponge-throwing, food, stalls and an ice cream van. She has also had tee-shirts, featuring Kallum and his favourite saying, printed especially for the event.

"The support I've had in helping me make this day happen is unbelievable," said Donna. "Local businesses donated for the day to make it happen. I only planned for this to be a small do, but it's turned out to be massive."

Kallum, of Raven Terrace, Fairweather Green, died at Leeds General Infirmary after weeks of being treated for his injuries. He was the front-seat passenger in a red Mini that was in the crash with the red Toyota on the A647 at Priestley Hill at about 3.30am on April 21.

The Mini's driver and another passenger were hospitalised as a result of the crash. The driver of the private hire vehicle suffered six fractured ribs and lung damage.
