A GUEST who attacked a part-time waiter at a wedding celebration has been spared an immediate prison sentence.

Salman Khan punched the 17-year-old student as he carried a tray at the Rio Grande, in Woodhead Road, on June 15.

Khan, 21, accused the teenager of staring at his sister, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Another man punched the victim first and Khan joined in, possibly armed with a fork from the wedding meal, prosecutor Robert Galley said.

Khan, of Heathdale Road, Huddersfield, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm.

The court heard that the teenager suffered two deep cuts to his head, needing up to eight stitches and leaving him scarred.

There was also a mark on his head possibly caused by a fork.

Khan's barrister, Peter Hampden, conceded it was "appalling behaviour in front of a whole party attending a wedding."

Khan had no previous convictions, was full of remorse and terrified of going to prison.

Judge John Potter sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, for "a momentary act of complete madness."

He was ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work and pay his victim £3,000 compensation.
