THE family of an eight-year-old boy who is battling cancer for a second time believe he has responded well to his latest chemotherapy treatment which ends today.

Shane Edwards was six when he was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in February 2012.

He underwent two major operations, radiotherapy and months of chemotherapy.

His parents, Tracy and Philip Edwards, believed Shane was starting to win the fight against the aggressive form of cancer after months of regular scans came back clear. But after developing a headache at school in July this year, further tests showed the tumour was back.

Doctors initially told the family, of Miles Hill Crescent, Bierley, that nothing could be done for him, but Mrs Edwards insisted he receive treatment, and he is now finishing a second round of chemotherapy.

The 33-year-old believes he has responded well and is hopeful his next scan in October will be more positive.

She was, however, disappointed to learn that he had not been accepted on a clinical trial in London, but is now waiting to hear about a different form of experimental treatment and has not given up hope.

She said: "I've been searching the internet every day looking for possible treatment for Shane. I've looked for treatment in America too, and told the doctors here that if we have to take him abroad we will.

"Some people have asked me about proton therapy, like Ashya King is having in Prague, but I've been told by doctors that it is not suitable for Shane."

People in Bradford have helped raise more than £3,000 for Shane, as part of the family's fundraising drive to help with expenses connected to any treatment and for his wish list.

Much to his delight Shane took delivery of a petrol buggy earlier this month, paid for through the fundraising, which had been top of the list.

After reading about the family in the T&A, Kerry Stringer, of Wibsey, faced her fears and tackled a 200ft bungee jump at The Woodman Pub on Manchester Road, which raised around £1,000 in sponsorship.

Pubs are also organising special events and businesses are donating items to be auctioned through Shane's Fundraising page on Facebook.

There will be a fun day at The Gallopers pub, off Wakefield Road in Bowling, on Saturday, September 27, from 1pm to 5pm. There will be a bouncy castle, mascots, raffles and face painting.
