A NEW project could help children in some of Bradford's poorest areas improve their reading skills.

The National Literacy Trust, the charity behind the Bradford Literacy Campaign, is joining a new coalition of charities, teachers, parents and businesses to tackle poor reading skills in under 11s.

The Read On. Get On. campaign aims to get parents reading to children for ten minutes a day and recruit more volunteers to help children in disadvantaged areas.

Councillor Ralph Berry (pictured), the executive for children's services on Bradford Council, said: "This is what Bradford needs. It is a massive project, a huge step forward. It is essential we improve achievement levels in Bradford for reading, and it is just as important that children enjoy and have fun with reading."

Imran Hafeez, manager of the National Literacy Trust’s Bradford Hub, said: "By supporting parents to read with young children for just ten minutes a day and helping disadvantaged children improve their reading through programmes like Early Words Together, we can contribute to this important mission to help create a nation of strong readers."
