POLICE are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a four-year-old boy following a blaze at his Keighley home.

Nathan Harrison and his older brother Matthew, ten, were rescued by their mother Jodie Collins from the smoke-filled house in Sunnyhill Grove, Exley Head.

The brothers both received treatment from paramedics at the scene, but Nathan later died in hospital.

Police and fire teams have been investigating the cause of the fire, which started in an upstairs bedroom of the detached house at about 2pm on Monday, August 11.

An inquest, which opened in Bradford today into his death, confirmed that the police were continuing their inquiries into the tragic incident.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Cousins told the inquest: "At approximately 2pm on Monday, August 11, a report was received of a house fire at Sunnyhill Grove, Keighley. The fire brigade and paramedics attended quickly at this location to find a fire and significant smoke damage emanating from an upstairs bedroom."

He went on to explain how Nathan was taken from there to hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 3pm. A subsequent port-mortem examination revealed the cause of his death was smoke inhalation.

He added: "There is a full police investigation ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the fire."

Assistant Bradford Coroner Dr Dominic Bell agreed that Nathan's body could be released to the family for burial and adjourned the hearing until the conclusion of the police investigation.

In a statement issued after the fire, Miss Collins and Nathan’s father, Chris Harrison, said they had been left “devastated” by the tragedy, and described their young son as a “loving, happy and sweet child”.

Mr Harrison added: “We all loved Nathan dearly. We are all distraught. He was a beautiful little boy. We will miss him.”
