POLICE have made a breakthrough which could lead to justice for the family of murdered grandad Clement 'Butch' Desmier.

Detectives are following new forensic leads which could help to identify the brutal killers of the Bradford father-of-six - two years to the day after his death.

Mr Desmier, 68 - described as a grandfather with "a heart of gold" - was viciously attacked at his home, in Rowlestone Rise, Greengates, on Thursday, August 23, 2012.

He was found dead in his armchair, with a pillow over his head. He had suffered 70 separate injuries, including 40 stab wounds, and had been tortured before he was killed.

Despite a number of arrests, police are still striving to catch the killers of the popular grandfather-of-ten.

On the second anniversary of Mr Desmier's murder, the senior investigating officer, Detective Superintendent Mark Ridley, said West Yorkshire officers had been liaising with the National Crime Agency and an independent forensic review had been carried out on all evidence seized.

Det Supt Ridley said: "That review has identified a number of forensic opportunities for us to consider. These are very important new lines of inquiry which I think will bring us closer to identifying who is responsible, bring them to justice, and provide Butch's family with the answers they need.

"His family is still devastated by its loss, compounded by the fact that they do not know why he was murdered, or who did it."

The motive for the murder remains unclear, but Det Supt Ridley said it was possible that more than one person was involved.

He said: "There is a good chance that they confided in somebody, and I would ask anyone who has been told something about Mr Desmier's murder to consider how his family is feeling and the impact it has had on their lives, and to contact us.

"We have had a good response to appeals in the past. There is a good chance that his killers knew Mr Desmier, or had a strong link to the local community. I appeal to that community to come forward if they have information."

Earlier this year detectives released new CCTV footage showing a key witness. The clip shows a man walking along Redcar Road in Ravenscliffe, minutes after Mr Desmier was seen entering his house with a man - fewer than 100 yards away, at about 4pm on Wednesday, August 22.

The man appears to be dressed in light blue - possibly denim - clothing, smoking a cigarette and carrying a plastic carrier bag.

Police are still trying to trace and identify him.

Det Supt Ridley added: "There are still a lot of unanswered questions, particularly who the two people were seen in his garden, stood by his front door and entering his house during the early hours of Thursday, August 23. They were the last people to be seen at his address before he died."

The Crimestoppers charity has offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killers.
