A PREGNANT woman, children and homeowners were evacuated from their homes in Bradford due to fears of a major gas explosion early today.

Firefighters from Odsal were called to the junction of Holme Lane and Tong Street shortly after midnight where a damaged underground electricity cable was arcing due to earlier torrential rain.

"It was close to a ruptured gas main and presented a very serious risk," said Odsal watch commander Sally Evers.

"We called the gas company and it was decided to evacuate 11 people from flats above shops and takeaways in Tong Street and houses in Holme Lane.

"A heavily pregnant lady, a toddler and a couple of other children were among those evacuated.

"We called for the Red Cross support vehicle based at Idle fire station which arrived to offer hot drinks, food and shelter.

"It's an excellent facility which can also give out advice to people on temporary re-housing and insurance matters."

She said Northern Gas Network worked with the crew at the scene until it was made safe at 5am.
