Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Carlton Bolling College students have achieved record results in both their recent GCSE and Post-16 examinations.

Sixth form results were above even the school’s ambitious targets, with the average grade per exam entry rising by around half a grade on average.  Achievement in vocational-based sixth form subjects were particularly strong with the average grade coming in just below an A grade.

Progress in GCSE results were also the best in the school’s history, with Mathematics being a notable improver with 62% of students gaining A* to C passes and a double-digit rise in students hitting their expected progress targets.

Headteacher Adrian Kneeshaw was pleased overall with the results, but sees much greater scope for further improvement.

He said: “We are obviously pleased with the results, but many changes have been made this year which will serve to make results far better in 2015”.

Headteacher Ian Morrel said: “It is fantastic that students achieve excellent examination results and I am delighted for both Anna and Katie who not only have a 100% attendance record but achieved 100% A*-B grades in 12 subjects each.

"They are a credit to the school and have been jointly rewarded for their dedication and commitment.”

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

MATURE student Prabhjot Kaur returned to education after deciding she wanted more to her life than just being a housewife, and was delighted with her GCSE results yesterday.

The 32 year old Bradford College student collected A*s in citizenship and sociology, As in Psychology and English and a B in media. She arrived in the country from India 12 years ago, and apart from working part time in family businesses has never had a job. One of the main reasons she wanted to return to education was so she could help her children with their homework, and to provide them with a good role model.

She said: "I couldn't help my children with their work, including English as I was brought up in a different country. I wanted to motivate them. This was a big step for me and I didn't know how it would work out studying with younger students. Everyone was really friendly and I didn't feel out of my depth. It really helped boost my confidence.

"My children are starting high school soon and I wanted to motivate them to do well.

"I haven't worked professionally before and every time I look into it I need GCSEs. I just wanted more than just being a housewife." She hopes to use her qualifications to go into primary school teaching or psychology.

Fulneck School, Pudsey, has seen a ten per cent increase in the number of its pupils gaining five or more A*-C grades in this year’s GCSEs.

The figure has risen from 73 per cent last year to 83 per cent, whilst a total of 54 per cent of grades were marked at A*-B.

Individual success saw Annabelle Swift achieving ten A*s and one A; Laura Wilson-Green, eight A*s, two As and one B; Ellis Lill one A* and ten As; and Tom Hobbs three A*s, five As and three Bs.

In addition, the school’s Learning Support Unit helped Johnny Marsden – who is dyslexic – pass ten GCSEs with one A*, five As, two Bs and two Cs.

Keiron McMahon - who has Aspergers syndrome and is dyslexic and was told by a previous school that he would be unlikely to receive even an E at GCSE English – achieved Cs in English Language and English Literature, which included an A in one of his English Literature papers.

Fulneck School Principal, Deborah Newman, said: “We are delighted with this year’s GCSE results. A ten per cent increase in the number of pupils gaining five or more A*-C grades is brilliant news.

“We have fabulous teachers at Fulneck School who really do inspire, mentor and encourage our pupils to fulfil their potential. I would like to pay particular tribute to the Learning Support Unit and the great work it does, which is evident in today’s results.”

At Horsforth School, a record 80% of students achieved five or more A*- C grades including English and mathematics at GCSE, with more than a third of all grades awarded at A* or A.

Dr Keith Bothamley, Horsforth School’s Headteacher, said;  ‘‘These excellent GCSE results come exactly a week after a further year of record breaking A-level results, where more than one third of all grades were awarded at A*or A.  Both sets of results are a reward for all the hard work of our students and staff. We look forward to welcoming students back next week as the majority of them are intending to take up Post-16 study with us.’’

Rise in A* and A Grades for GCSE Students at Hipperholme Grammar School
Pupils at Hipperholme Grammar School are today celebrating success in their GCSE examinations, as once again the School has seen an increase in the number of top grades achieved.

The percentage of pupils gaining A* - B grades rose by 4%, despite all warnings from examination boards nationwide that grades would be lower this year. The School achieved an excellent pass rate with 91% of pupils gaining 5 A*- C grades whilst the pass rates in French and Design Technology were 100%.

Once again, the School's focus on helping each individual pupil to improve and succeed has paid off.

Notable success was achieved by Catherine Lathom-Sharp from Norwood Green who gained 9A* and 2 A grades; Megan Gaunt (Low Moor, Bradford), Laura Fisher (Cleckheaton), Lydia Chin (Huddersfield) and Kieran Hoey (Halifax) all gained outstanding grades with an impressive array of A* and A grades between them.

Headmaster Jack Williams was delighted with the results and praised everyone on their success: “All our students have worked extremely hard for their GCSE examinations and I am delighted that they have gained the excellent results which they deserve.

"A number of the pupils only joined our School in Year 10 from other local schools and made tremendous progress in the 2 year GCSE course; others overcame personal adversity to gain grades they can truly be proud of.”

Staff and students at Oasis Academy Lister Park are celebrating after recording their first GCSE results.

Ian Richardson, Principal of Oasis Academy Lister Park says, “We couldn’t be prouder of our students. Today’s results are a reward for their hard work. It’s also satisfying to see that the endless endeavours and sacrifices that our staff have poured into the academy since we opened are truly bearing fruit.

“Of course, as much as we fully intend to celebrate today’s results, we know that academic success is only part of what we’re really about. At Oasis Academy Lister Park we want every young person to grow up to be responsible members of their families and communities as well as achieving their academic potential.”

"Our very first top student is Ruqayyah Ali who managed to achieve no less than seven A* grades at GCSE in English literature, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, history and textiles as well a grade A in religious studies, a grade B in English language, a grade C in French and a double Distinction* (equivalent to A*A*) in BTEC Level 2 Health & Social Care."

David Horn, Beckfoot School headteacher (pictured above) says: "Beckfoot is very proud of our magnificent students who have achieved amazing GCSE results this summer and made fantastic progress from when they started with us as 11 year olds.

UK SEES INCREASE IN A* TO C GCSE GRADES

The proportion of GCSE exams awarded at least a C grade has risen, official figures show, amid early indications that some schools are seeing turbulence in results this year.

Just over two thirds (68.8%) of entries scored A*-C, up 0.7 percentage points on last summer, according to statistics published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ).

But the overall A*-G pass rate has fallen for the second year running, and is down 0.3 percentage points to 98.5% from 98.8% in 2013.

The proportion of entries awarded the highest grade has also fallen slightly, with 6.7% gaining an A*, down from 6.8% last year.

It is the third year in a row that this has dropped.

The rise in A*-C grades is the first increase in three years, and comes despite massive differences in this year's English and maths results, both of which are considered key subjects.

In total, 61.7% of English entries scored a C or higher this year, down 1.9 percentage points from last summer.

This is believed to be the biggest drop in the qualification's history.

Maths saw an opposite result, with 62.4% of entries gaining an A*-C grade, up a massive 4.8 percentage points on 2013.
