WITH thousands of pupils in the district anxiously waiting for their GCSE results tomorrow, a series of events have been organised to help those undecided what their next step will be.

Events run by Bradford Council, colleges and youth organisations will help both those who have yet to choose what they want to pursue post GCSE and those who did not perform as well as they had hoped in their exams.

After results are published there will be a recruitment event held in Centenary Square, Bradford. Organised by youth organisations Connexions and Prospects, the event will help young people decide whether to move into further education, an apprenticeship or post 16 training. It runs from 11am to 3.30pm.

Bradford Council is in the middle of a push to get more young people to study apprenticeships, and have planned a workshop at Culture Fusion on Friday for young people who may not want to continue their education along traditional routes.

The session takes place between 1pm and 4pm, and there will be professionals on hand to talk with young people about the opportunities available beyond A-levels and university.

Councillor Ralph Berry, the Council's executive member for children and young peoples services, said: "Although many school leavers opt to follow the traditional academic route, a growing number are taking advantage of the wide range of apprenticeships now on offer.

"It is a really valuable route for those wanting to learn new skills and earn a wage at the same time. It enables many youngsters to find a path into employment at a time when it is not easy to always find a job."

Meanwhile, Bradford College is holding a community fun day tomorrow which will also allow potential students to speak to college staff about courses offered. The college is also opening its new, £50 million David Hockney Building for tours, a few weeks before it opens for new students.

The event is also open to families and the day includes music, face painting, food stalls, prize draws, and games including bungee runs, rodeo bull, gladiator jousting, lazer maze and an assault course. It runs from 11am to 4pm.

Shipley College will also have advice sessions for students both tomorrow and Friday between 10.30am and 3pm at its Salt Building in Saltaire. Staff will be on hand to offer advice about courses and apprenticeships.
