A FRIGHTENED student complained she was "treated like an animal" by the man she accuses of beating and raping her, a jury heard.

The naive young Muslim woman was kept locked in her home by Abdul Hanif who took her phone and bank cards, it is alleged.

Hanif, 30, of Chapel Lane, Allerton, Bradford, denies three sample charges of rape and one offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, between February and June last year.

Hanif, who worked at McDonald's in Ingleby Road, Girlington, Bradford, is said to have strangled the London accountancy student with a mobile phone charger cable and ordered her to cook and clean for him.

Today, Stephen Naylor told the jury at Bradford Crown Court he allowed Hanif and the woman to stay at his home in Bradford.

Mr Naylor said Hanif had changed in the years since he had last seen him.

He had a "misogynistic" attitude to women, saying: "Treat them mean and keep them keen."

Hanif also spoke of "kicking a woman's lifeless body".

"When he came back from London, there was a dreadful streak," Mr Naylor said.

Hanif kept the vulnerable woman locked in his house and in a flat the couple moved to in Thorpe Edge, Bradford.

Mr Naylor said that when he visited the flat, the woman looked very unhappy and angry.

Hanif was aggressive to her, ordering her to take a meal away and make another one.

Mr Naylor said she rang him on June 27, 2013, saying she was unwell and accusing Hanif of domestic violence.

"She said he was treating her like and animal," he said.

The police were alerted and they had to batter down the door of the flat to free the woman, who came to the UK on a student visa in 2009.

Cross-examined by defence barrister, Geraldine Kelly, Mr Naylor said Hanif and the woman were in love when he first saw them together.

But within a week, he was calling her nasty names.

Mr Naylor described Hanif as charismatic but told the court there was a darker side.

"Hanif is a very frightening man and he trusts no-one," he said.

He believed he took the woman's phone away because he was worried about her getting in touch with other people.

The trial continues.
