A KEIGHLEY brewery's full flavoured, classic bitter was today crowned the best beer in Britain.

Timothy Taylor's Boltmaker beat beers from microbrewers and large regional companies to win the accolade.

The West Yorkshire brewed ale was judged the Supreme Champion by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) at its annual beer festival in London.

Timothy Taylor's head brewer Peter Eells said: "We work very hard to produce great beers and we really believe this is the best beer we can brew, so to have it acknowledged in such an important competition is absolutely fantastic."

Managing director Charles Dent said: "We're absolutely delighted. It's our favourite, it's the brewers favourite, it's the beer that you drink if you're drinking with us and it's named after one of our favourite pubs - The Boltmakers."

There was also success for Saltaire Brewery in Shipley which won gold in the speciality beers category for its Triple Chocoholic brew.

I agree to a point, but that's a bit extreme. Taylors don't get into my top 40, however I wouldn't drink John Smiths if it was free.

You mustn't be drinking in the right places, I tried it in the Corn Dolly, it was a damned fine pint.

Ah Mad Donna of Ravenscliffe, I always thought her preferred tipple was 3 litres of white lightning and a bottle of counterfeit vodka?

With so many micros around these days producing such fantastic beers I'm surprised that anybody would mention John Smiths in a discussion about the best ale.
